Apogee Presents: Top 5 Brands to Watch in 2019

Apogee Presents has decided to highlight the key components embedded in the following groups that have set their stage for a promising 2019. Due to the innovative, strategic and respected positioning embodied around these companies, our top 5 brands to watch in 2019 are listed in no particular order.

Relix (New York, NY)

Relix magazine launched as a newsletter in 1974 consciously connecting “deadheads” who religiously recorded Grateful Dead concerts. The rudimental foundation of Relix has transformed almost every decade since then blossoming into a well-rounded resource for the live music scene with a team that compliments the interests of photography, videography, writers, musical compositions, and event coordination, orchestrated by seasoned industry professionals. Most recently, Relix has folded into Relix Media Group (LLC) by late owner, Peter Shapiro. Shapiro, who acquired Relix in 2009, stated

“Relix‘s core is live music and we will document and embrace that every step of the way. We will use the respected Relix brand as an anchor, and expand from there. With this new, yet familiar, team in-place we feel strongly that we have a strong and vibrant magazine on all levels and we’re all very excited about the opportunity to build on Relix‘s venerable 35-year history.”

Relix’s historical base layer combined with the renaissance of the live music experience has paved the way for a new era in news media publication.

Apogee Presents reasons to watch in 2019: The use of a highly underutilized 21st-century facet of the live music scene. The Relix Channel is a live-stream feed partnered with venues such as Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY)and festivals like LOCK’N (Arrington, VA). The implementation of live-streaming technology opens up an entirely new realm of digital offerings presenting Relix digital media exposure across multiple online outlets.

CID Entertainment (Philadelphia, PA)

CID Entertainment is a mashup of the ultimate travel meets entertainment experience eloquently wrapped and presented in one package deal. CID Entertainment launched in 2007 with the support of its parent company, On Location Experiences, in correlation with several other subsidiaries relating to traveling and hospitality services. Scott Cullather and Kristina McCoobery partnered together in 2008 founding “the best live brand storytelling agency in the world.” A “challenge everything” mentality can be found at the core of INVNT by creating a lasting impression through remarkable experiences for organizations and brands. Their past event success is almost as impressive as their list of clientele ranging from consumer electronic companies like Samsung to auto-manufacturers such as General Motors, and everything in between. Their most notable event of the year landed the #1 spot on A LIST Guide’s Top 5 Events of 2018. The “Coachella of conferences”  left many attendees down right blown away.

Apogee Presents reason for watching INVNT in 2019: A press release on December 27th, 2018 announced the partnership between the iconic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and INVNT commemorating the “Golden Era” of Woodstock at its original 1969 location in Bethel, New York. Details of the event are shy, however the date has been cemented for August 16-17th, 2019. Stay tuned for more details!

The Bowery Presents (New York, NY)

The Bowery Presents, launching in 1994, has branded around concert promotion and venue management across a handful of venues on the East Coast with a presence in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Maine including such iconic spots as Terminal 5 (NY) and Electric Factory (PA).  This 2,700 seated venue, previously held by Live Nation, has recently renamed Franklin Music Hall. The Bowery Presents gained its national recognition after the addition of several new partners from traditionally rival companies.

“The company’s fortunes changed last summer when Jim Glancy, president of the New York division of Live Nation and a prominent figure in the business, left to become a Bowery partner. Later the company also hired away Randy Henner, a senior vice president under Mr. Glancy at Live Nation, as well as Josh Moore, a cousin of John Moore’s who had been booking the Nokia Theater.”

Ovation Hall, located within the resort, is a multi-functional facility capable of engaging crowds upwards of 5,000 people.

This mobile party machine couldn’t have come online at a more influential time. While venues in Austin continue to be over-saturated with similar lineups, or close down all together, the Vibe Vessel has been delivering hit-after-hit cultivating the late night techno crowd in Austin, Texas. Coordinated by a team of avid vibe chasers, the vessel has quickly gained a following with limited observed resistance. This underground rave ideology seems to be popular among the trans/deep house crowd noted from their selection of artists including Gene Farris, Capyac, and Kai Castro.

Thailand Music Milestone

Stemming from an encounter at the 2019 SXSW Tradeshow, Apogee Presents team member Eli Zablosky traveled abroad to attend the first ever Bangkok Music City in Chareonkrung, Bangkok. This first – annual, free event, was a foreign structure designed to demonstrate proof of concept in hopes to develop the conversation of encouraging government support and awareness to the music industry in Thailand.

Who orchestrated this rodeo?

The flagship event was created and hosted by two local anchors of the Thai music scene, Nylon and Fungjai. Both Nylon (Media publication) and Fungjai (Music platform, event organizer, and marketing agency) have been active supporters in the Thai music scene for the past few years and understand the potential brewing beneath the surface. They have hosted other events previously, but none with as broad of an international reach.

How about some more details?

The first ever Bangkok Music City, held the weekend of November 1st, featured 30 international delegates and dozens of bands representing indie music scenes native to Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Sweden, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Portugal, China, and Taiwan. Bands spread across several local downtown venues, including a main stage at the Grand Postal Building, attracted audiences with two days of conferences and music showcases. Subject matter covered in conference sessions dissected the music industry “equation” covering each piece of the puzzle including government support of local artists, sustainability in indie music scenes, and exporting music internationally. Delegates from Asia, Europe, and North America shared experiences and insights from their respective positions including government officials, festival owners, and record labels.

Music genres included indie grunge – rock, psych – rock flavors produced from Thai instruments, experimental rnb – jazz ensembles, singer – song writer, pop – punk fusions, and blended variety of many other genres. Notable artists who stood out to our team include Chucheewa (TH), Supergoods (TH), M1LDL1FE (SG), My Life as Ali Thomas (TH), Jindajohn (TH), Gym and Swim (TH), Arvid Nero (SW), Tilly Birds (TH), brb. (SG), Pyra (TH), and Tontrakul (TH). Seriously, very talented musicians. Every set attended was delivered by nothing but top – notch artists! We highly encourage you to check out the links.

So, what’s the big deal?

Artists in Thailand, unlike others of many nations in attendance, do not have support options from their government. Such programs could help through means of creating an export system or opening applications for monetary grants. This is a stark contrast to countries such as Canada who possess around 12 export offices.

Bangkok Music City demonstrated a centralized interest to multiple audiences during their two day event. The internal audience, compromised of artists and government officials, witnessed a proof of concept in favor of supporting local musicians on a large scale format and the potential economic impact it can provide to Thailand. The external audience, international and local attendees, gained a global perspective on the music industry through the means of structured sessions and experienced artistic expressions from all over the world.

With help from their government, Thailand’s emerging music scene could very well become the next international cultural destination… watch out, Austin!

All in all,

The milestone of Bangkok Music City successfully equipped local artists and indie music supporters strong ammunition as they pursue larger support from local entities such as the Thai government.

Apogee Presents would like to thank visionary Piyapong Muenprasertdee (Fungjai) for the invitation. We greatly anticipate a second year!
